Every week, TV5MONDE offers a roulette of mouthwatering images on its social media channels, showcasing dishes commonly found in French households. Some dishes might require extra work when it comes to preparation, but fear not with the Tomates farcies (stuffed tomatoes)! This recipe is super versatile as you can change the ingredients' list to your hearts desire, not to mention that it's easy to make and a healthy alternative. We are offering a vegetarian version this time, but feel free to add minced meat to this recipe, or spice it up with a chili meat and beans stuffing!

The tomato is such a versatile fruit that as an ingredient, the possibilities to cook with it are endless. This particular dish is not necessarily French by origin, as many cultures and regions offer similar versions of their own. To add a special French touch to it, we are making it extra cheesy. Add more, or tone it down as you so please.

Servings: 6

What you'll need:
  • 6 tomatoes
  • Croutons (either pre-seasoned store-bought croutons, or home-made seasoned with cheese, herbs and garlic). Crush the croutons.  **Substitute rice for croutons if you prefer. Cook the rice before hand. For extra flavour, cook the rice with some seasoning simmered in the water used to boil the rice.
  • Grated parmesan cheese - 2 tablespoons or add generously
  • Cheddar cheese (or Gouda) - same portion as above.
  • 4 tablespoons of melted butter (unsalted if you prefer a healthier alternative)
  • Salt and fresh ground pepper
  • Chopped basil or parsley
Other than cheese, herbs and spices are key to this dish!

The how-to:
  • Cut the top off each of the tomato, remove the pulp. Do not cut off too much.
  • Pat down or flip upside down on paper towel to drain.
  • Mixed stuffing ingredients, or commence by putting in croutons/rice first, topping off with grated cheese.
  • Spoon stuffing into tomatoes.
  • Place tomatoes on baking dish. Cover with aluminium foil to prevent over-heating or browning.
  • Bake at 350 degrees celsius for 30 minutes, or grill if you prefer.
  • Garnish with chopped parsley or whole leaves of basil.

For that extra classy presentation, put the top of the tomatoes back on the finished dish. Enjoy!
