Many Japanese workers get about a week off around the end of April and beginning of May. This is because there is a cluster of national holidays during this time. The Japanese “Golden Week” is often abbreviated to GW and it is a collection of the following public holidays:
The “Golden Week” starts on April 29th - The Emperor’s Birthday (天皇誕生日Tenno Tanjobi)

followed by Showa Day (昭和の日Showa no Hi, Constitution Memorial Day (憲法記念日Kenpo Kinenbi, Greenery day (みどりの日 Midori no Hi)- The day is dedicated to the environment and nature since the Emperor of Japan loved plants and nature.

And finally,
Children’s Day (こどもの日 Kodomo no Hi)- It is also called the “Boy’s Festival (Tango no Sekku). Families would pray for the health and future success of their sons by displaying samurai dolls, which symbolizes strength, power and success.

The Golden week usually takes part around April 29th to May 5th. This is known to be the longest vacation period of the year for most Japanese companies. Many big factories close down for a week to 10 days.
The Japanese people usually take paid time off during the holiday since it lies under a very pleasant time of the year. Temperatures are neither too cold nor too hot.
